“I am nor afraid to get some beatings from Dad, but he does not have money to buy a shoe for you”… The realities are very often “naked”, but very often the “nakedness” is not shown as such. This movie is an opposition to such a comment. It is pregnant with ideas and expressions. This movie shows the reality of life in a very realistic way. The poverty in the cities is much hidden and normally none look to it. So this movie brings out a very real way the poverty and wretchedness of the city.
The move is directed in a very good manner. The one who watches will go with the movie. It has a beginning and a progress of the story and a very successive end too. Though the language is strange to the Indian viewers, since there is progress of the movie the attention would be caught and the language as such does not become an obstacle.
The camera work is good. There are not so much long shots. Almost all the shots are small and they capture our mind. And the use of camera is a in a good way. May be the longest shot would be one and half minute.
The background of the movie is very realistic. And they give us a very much involved feelings. Most of the sceneries too like that of a developed Indian city. And they look like very real. The vegetable shop, the salt seller, the houses, the unwanted way of talking by the rich people to the poor, the desire of the poor to become rich such are very much realistic even in Indian context.
The story as such is very good. In comparing with any of the Indian movie it is very much different. Because there is no dance, fight, a villain and hero and heroine, some supporting start etc… are not there. And also in order to shot a small movie also in India, the director spent a lot of money by going out side of India and so on. But here such thing is not there.
Taking little children and doing a very communicating movie is very rare in India. Of course there are movie with children as main characters, but they are more of entertainment and not of a communicating movie. In Malayalam there is a movie with children -- My Dear Kuttichatan, but that is more of entertainment and not a realistic and communicative movie. Such movies are available in almost all the languages, but such as this.
The movie begins with showing a big city in America. And then a man repairing the shoe. It is very real picture. And soon we come to know that is not in America but in an Arab country. As the boy goes to buy vegetables, he keeps the shoe outside of the shop and when he comes back it is lost. And the story begins from here.
The desire to go to school in a decent way is always in the heart of the children. Because there are very rich pupil who come to school with very costly shoes, and so it is a shame for another child to go with a poor dress.
As soon the boy comes home the little sister asks him about the shoe. And when she hears that he missed the shoe she is sad. And during the study time they are having a very nice conversation. But there is no talking, but only writing. And that show how powerful the communication can be even without any sound. And the parents are unable to understand the ‘activity’ that is going among these little children.
They decide to use the shoe of him. And so when she goes school in the morning she uses his shoe and he waits in the road to get his shoes from her. And so that continues and at last when there is a running competition he partake in it and the third prize is a pair of shoes and he wants it and he runs for it. But he gets the first prize. And the movie end.
The unfortunate event of loosing the shoe becomes a story and very real communicating instrument. And it is very toughing movie.
‘The home’ in the movie is a very realistic. The father who is small sugar cutter for the mosque and a mother who is sick and two little children who are the ‘hero and heroine’ of the movie. So the main back ground of the movie is this and that is shown in very real way. And a very much touching way.
The poverty of the house makes the boy to be late in the school and the head master of the school doubts about the sincerity of the boy. One time when he sent out the school only because of the mercy of his teacher he is admitted again the school. The school back ground is very real. Where different kinds of children come to study and who have their different back ground of coming to school. Some want to play football, chatting in the class and so on.
The movie has a special way of presenting common values. The sharing of soup with the neighbor is very much is a very good expression of it. Though they are poor family they have the mentality to share with the needy neighbor.
The value of friendship is also another value presented in the movie. As they search of a job, they come to a family where a small boy, who is in need a good friend. It is a reality that when parents are too busy with their daily works, they forget about the small and real needs of their children. So this friendship is shown in an adequate way.
The value of sincerity too is given there. When her companion gets her pen which was given by her brother, she brings back and gives her back. Though as soon as she got is she wanted to giver her, she could not giver. And in the house she looks at it and admires it, but beyond her desire for it, she brings back and gives it. And it is an important value that is not seen in the lives of Indian children, whereas it is an important value too.
The psychology of little children too is presented in a well manner. Because when the little girl goes to the school she is much aware of the dirty shoe that she wears and the beautiful ones that her companions are wearing. So now and then that is very often she looks at the foot of her companions and feels that she does not have a good shoe. And that is indeed portrayed in a well manner.
The happiness is very much expressed and presented in a proper manner. Because there are very many instances where the happiness of children is shown.
By the end of the movie, the race was shown almost all the time. And it was too long and it could have cut short a bit less at least. And the running too was with a background of needing to get the shoe as the gift. But when the reality is a different one the boy feels sad. And all such things are shown in a real way. And in a very touching way. And that need to be appreciated.
The ‘hero’ is presented as a suffering hero. From the beginning till the end there are enough ‘sufferings’ for him to undergo. Even in the race when his companion pulls him down, the spectators too feel with him. Because of their sympathy for him. And even when he misses the shoe from the beginning of the movie, is also showing the suffering of the ‘hero’.
The movie as whole is presented well. The children’s psychology and needs are presented in a very appropriate manner. And first up of all that need to be appreciated. And also the reality of poverty is presented well.
From the communication point of view this movie has a very rich way of communicating the realties in a very realistic way. As the world is growing more global village seldom we get such movies. Most of the Hollywood and other Indian movies and English movies present different kind of values. And they are very often sex and violence and dance and things like that. But this movie without any of such things capture the mind of the spectators and it also give a very clear cut idea of life.
